Pilot project in Burgkirchen: promising initial results
in the treatment of PFAS with cold plasma

terraplasma has launched a pilot project “Cold plasma for innovative drinking water treatment KIT” in collaboration with the municipality of Burgkirchen an der Alz 2024 to reduce PFAS contamination on a trial basis using cold plasma technology.

After an initial test run with water that was too slightly contaminated, a second test was carried out with a water sample taken in Kastl, a heavily contaminated region near the Gendorf plant. Experts accompanied the water sampling in order to test the effectiveness of the cold plasma technology under realistic conditions. Samples were taken from a total of three wells in order to analyze different water qualities – both with and without iron and manganese as well as different PFAS concentrations.

The discussion with those responsible, including water master Michael Mayer, highlighted the challenges of drinking water treatment. The municipality invests considerable resources in existing technologies such as activated carbon filters and UV disinfection, with annual operating costs in the six-figure euro range. Experience to date shows that each water must be treated individually and that new technologies are welcome in order to improve the purification processes.

The knowledge gained will be incorporated into further research into the use of cold plasma for PFAS reduction. terraplasma sees this collaboration as a valuable opportunity to test the technology in real-life applications and make a contribution to sustainable drinking water supplies.

Cold plasma offers a breakthrough solution for medicine by accelerating healing processes and effectively fighting infections. Cold plasma generates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species such as ozone (O₃), hydroxyl radicals (OH) and nitric oxide (NO). These promote blood circulation, activate growth factors and simultaneously destroy bacteria, viruses and fungi. The tissue remains intact and no resistant germs develop.

The plasma care® from terraplasma medical GmbH is a handy and mobile medical device for treating wounds with cold atmospheric plasma. It is about the size and weight of a telephone receiver and has a battery capacity that is sufficient for around 120 treatments. It can therefore be used by outpatient wound specialists as well as in clinical and private practice settings.

To ensure sterile treatment and avoid cross-contamination, the plasma care® is used in combination with a sterile packaged spacer. The following rule applies: one spacer per patient and wound. The treatment area per wound surface is 13 cm². For larger wounds, the spacer can be used up to 6 times within one treatment session.
